What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (MA), also known as Medicare part C, is a type of medical plan that is offered by private insurance companies as an alternative to your Medicare parts A and B benefits. In most cases, Medicare Advantage plans offer more comprehensive benefits, including Rx, dental and vision coverage, at a lower cost than Original Medicare plans. Medicare Advantage networks include Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Regional Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, most Medicare services are covered through the plan as opposed to being covered by Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage plans offering Rx coverage are also known as MA-PDs.

Who is Eligible for a Medicare Advantage Plan?

For the most part, you can join a Medicare Advantage Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS), or Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plan if you meet all of the following conditions:

  • You live in the service area of the plan you want to join. If you live in another state for part of the year, check to see if the plan will cover you there
  • You have Medicare Part A and Part B.
  • You do not have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)

Why Medicare Advantage?

It is important to note that Medicare Advantage plans are NOT supplemental coverage. They are more comprehensive, less costly alternatives to your Medicare Parts A and B coverage. Advantages of having these types of plans may include:

  • Limits on out-of-pocket maximums
  • Lower deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance
  • Low premiums
  • All coverage found under Medicare parts A and B, plus extra benefits including Rx coverage (MA-PD), dental, vision, hearing and even gym memberships.

Any person who enrolls in a Medicare Advantage plan is still enrolled in the Original Medicare program. To participate in a Medicare Advantage plan, you must choose to enroll in such a plan through an authorized, private Medicare Advantage provider. Once enrolled, you must generally receive all care through the plan's provider in order to receive Medicare coverage. The object of Medicare Advantage plans is to provide necessary care along with extra benefits, while managing healthcare in order to reduce costs.
